Article 1 - The Origins of Origins

History
of a meeting, a house, and a way of life
It wasn't a project.
It was us.
Origins does not come from a concept.
It was not born from a business plan or a brilliant idea put down on paper.
It was born from an encounter, a love, and a place that called for something other than an ordinary life.
We were not trying to create a "holistic place".
We were simply trying to live justly.

A house before any idea
Before there was Origins, there was a house.
Coralie's grandmother's house.
A simple, lived-in place, without staging. A house where one arrives unannounced, where one opens the windows as soon as the sun returns, where the walls have witnessed several lives.
When we first went in there together, there was no projection.
Just a very clear feeling: here, the body relaxes on its own.
At that moment, the only question that mattered was simple:
Are we okay here?
The rest came later.
I come from here. And I came back here.
I was born in the Célé valley. My name is Valentin, and coming back here felt like the obvious thing to do.
This is not tourist information, it's an anchor.
I grew up with the light-colored stone, the river, the silence that falls at the end of the day. Like many who come from small territories, I needed to leave to understand what lay beneath my feet.
For over ten years, I worked in the hotel industry. Seasons, establishments, fast-paced rhythms. I loved the job, the welcoming, the service. But with time, one thing became clear: I wanted to build for others.
When Coralie came into my life, another thing became clear:
What if we built it in our own country?
She stayed for us. The project was born from that.
Coralie was not destined to stay in the Lot.
She was simply returning to spend the summer at the family home, after nearly ten years spent abroad. Nothing was set in stone, nothing was planned.
And then there was a village market.
A look, a conversation, a quiet certainty.
She decided to stay.
Not to create a place.
For our history.
Origins was born from that choice.
From a love embraced, a life change, an intimate decision that became a shared adventure.
The idea took root gradually.
We never "launched" Origins.
It settled in, almost against our will.
We were cooking.
We were having friends over.
We saw walkers passing by on the GR 651, right in front of the house.
We gave them water, exchanged a few words, sometimes shared a meal.
And one question kept coming up, naturally:
Why keep this to ourselves?
If this place did us good, it could do good for others.
Living on the road changes hospitality
The house is located directly on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago).
Every day, we see women and men carrying the essentials on their backs. Their pace is slow, their gaze often tired, but clear.
Observing this profoundly changes the way we welcome others.
It quickly becomes clear that comfort is not just about equipment.
Comfort is a smile, a glass of fresh water, a decent meal, a quiet place to sleep.
The desire to provide accommodation was born from that.
Not from a commercial ambition, but from a human necessity.
Before the rooms, there was rest
We didn't ask ourselves what "would work".
We wondered how we, ourselves, truly rest.
We have removed what is tiring:
No television, no overload, no unnecessary noise.
We chose what soothes: raw wood, natural light, simple materials, soft colors, an open view of the valley.
Each choice was made with a single idea in mind:
leave space for silence.
A cuisine born from a real need
We opened a restaurant, not because we wanted to run a restaurant.
It's because we couldn't find, around us, a kitchen adapted to Coralie's reality.
She has clear intolerances: gluten, lactose, refined sugar.
In the Lot region, it was difficult to eat without having to give up pleasure or explain one's constraints at length.
So we started cooking for ourselves.
Without frustration.
Without dogma.
With only one rule: to do yourself good.
We quickly realized that this need was not isolated.
An open kitchen, never exclusionary
Our cuisine is gluten-free, lactose-free and refined sugar-free.
But it's not a banner.
That's a basic principle.
We wanted a kitchen that could handle anything:
the one where people with food intolerances can eat peacefully.
and where others simply enjoy themselves, without even realizing it.
The best compliment we receive is:
"I didn't know it was gluten-free."
At that moment, we know that the balance is right.
Coralie creates. I support.
Cooking is Coralie's world above all else.
She imagines, tastes, adjusts. She transforms simple products into vibrant dishes, guided by the season and intuition.
For my part, I make sure that everything runs smoothly.
My experience in the hotel industry allows me to ensure the pace, the welcome, the service, the invisible but essential details.
It creates taste.
I maintain my balance.
And together, we move forward.
We're not trying to impress.
We cook organic, local, and fresh food.
We work with local producers, respect the seasons, and limit waste.
But above all, we try to keep things simple.
We don't want people to admire us.
We want them to breathe with us.
An origin, not a limit
Origines was born here in Brengues, because it was here that everything made sense.
But what we are building transcends a single place.
It is a way of welcoming, nourishing and caring, destined to live wherever it is received.
Origins is not an end point
Origins is not finished.
And that's a good thing.
It is a place that evolves, that adjusts, that learns.
A place where you can sleep soundly, eat without asking questions, walk without rushing.
If you've made it this far, it's perhaps because something here speaks to you.
So take your time.
Here, we do it with you.
